ABSTRACT Thesis Title : ANALYSIS OF ADVENTIST YOUTH MODERN DATING STYLE IN TOMPASO ADVENTIST HIGH SCHOOL IN THE VIEW OF 1 THESSALONIANS 5:23 Nama Peneliti : Charvo Suoth Nama dan Gelar : Magister Filsafat (M.Fil) Pembimbing Materi : Pdt. Dr. Alvyn Hendriks, M.Min Tanggal Selesai : Mei, 2019 These days there are lot of church members that do not pay attention to their children’s Christian’s education which can build Christian mindset for them. Thus they lose the chance to conduct a necessary godly life. In the other hand, those who admit to dearly God, obey the law, but because of the hectic of life, they neglected their child. For those reason above, the main question is? Quality. What kind of quality that needs to be produced. And in this matter, church is one of the character development companies that have an important contribution, after family, that can determine the character stabilization of the youth. Tompaso Adventist High School or more known as Tompaso SLA is a well-known High School among Adventist Church members in East Indonesia, especially South Sulawesi. This is the first Adventist School that exist in the land of Toar Lumimuut. In its development, many parents send their children not only to gain knowledge but also to be disciplined to rule a better life here. Diverse culture, ethnic, and social are exist in this SLA that make this school attractive in its way. This charm that make this school get various attention, especially in the way they shape the students’ character. It is unfortunate that in the previous years there is an indecent act that done by a teacher towards the student and this matter was exposed to the society. A voice record which talked about an indecent act that obviously should never happened between a teacher and the pupil. Moreover, an inappropriate video was spread about two students that kissing and ended one student has to be expelled. It is not taboo when you go to SLA and you will spotted some places where students dating, or even more, an empty class would also be the spot for them dating. Youth and teens spend a lot of their time to find their true-self when they go to school, including time when they interact with the opposite sex. In these times they will feel the turmoil of feeling as lady and gentleman. Here where they will begin to find acknowledgment and to proof their self. So these are times for parents, church and school to be careful and observe carefully towards the children. Nowadays how young people interact becomes one of the church concerns. It can’t be denied that these young people that study in an Adventist school is also the part of the millennial people which even being trap inside a dormitory but still can access the world easily through a lot facility and media. Moreover, the desires of a normal young people also naturally make them express some acts that contradictive with the truth and the principle of Bible. Sanctity is being attacked in the dating style these days by these youth. Whereas in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, indeed the Lord said to keep your sanctity/holiness and to hold responsible for your own self which actually belongs to our God. The situation that happened in SLA is the proof of Mrs. White vision. It is no doubt that that the situation of this sinful world brings a huge impact for education. Though this school was built on the right fundamental, but this school still needs to be evaluated, to be added, there are some reports from the staff there where the teacher of religion or philosophy is not graduated from the philosophy faculty. In fact, if this school being view as a religious school, then the school should have placing reliable teacher in relatable field. White has seen the state of this world that facing the consequence of sin, the sensitivity to the will of God decreases which result deviation and deterioration everywhere. The easiest targets are they who still try to find their life essential. When the young people see this world, that will be the time to determine where they will land their feet, either in the foundation of truth holiness, John 17:17 “Sanctify them Your through Truth; Your Word is Truth,” or instead to the unsupported believes that will collapsed the house (Luke 6:47-49). If we learn from a great figure, Simson, in her writings Mrs. White explained: Divine promise towards Manoah in the time when a son born, and being named Simson. It is true that he has an extraordinary strong physique. Simson trapped in a wrong fellowship, seduced by lust. This is all happen because his parents couldn’t control Simson, he unintentionally mingle with heathen. The heathen principle made him fall. Questions that showed up are what kind of needs that can be identified, why they leave their faith and church behind, and how church can abolish this process and give a handful help. The importance of this question popped up in considering the unchangeable young people in the Adventist youth. We need to go back to the right path as what is the real purpose the existence of education for God mean is that: the highest knowledge above everything is the knowledge of salvation. The best job that everyone can dream of is the job to win the soul from the sin to the holiness. To do this job, a strong foundation needs to be placed. A personality must get the right disciplined for the most perfect and highest development. Every brain’s body and brain capability need to be developed and trained properly. It is one of our responsibility to develop and train every talent that could help us to be a useful worker for God. The purpose of this research is: 1.) To know how deep students’ knowledge about Christian’s sanctity principle, 2.) To measure the awareness of applying the principle by the students who already know it, 3.) To know how big school’s influence in giving the right and effective education to the students for them to understand Christian’s sanctity principles, 4.) To know how deep the spirituality of the teachers in school to become the role model and guardian for the students so they can keep their sanctity in their fellowship. Background of the study will be displayed in 4 (four) parts, (1) About the first Thessalonians, the background of the writing of first Thessalonians, writer, place and time of writing, the purpose of writing this book, theme and characteristic of this book, the outline of the book, the method of Exegesis Technique in this book, and the distribution of this book, (2) The meaning of sanctify, (3) Meaning of spirit, soul and body, (4) Meaning of perfect and flawless. The variable of this research are; X1, how far the comprehension of students about the principle of sanctity in their fellowship, X2, how far the students of Tompaso Adventist High School awareness about the principle of sex education in their fellowship, X3, how deep the spirituality of the teachers on the school so they can have a strong foundation to be a guardian for their pupils. Y, analysis of Adventist youth modern dating style in Tompaso Adventist High School in the view of 1 Thessalonians 5:23. The number of respondent that has filled the questionnaire from 24 questions is 179. The profiles of respondents are sex, age, occupation and hometown. The analysis is needed to know either the data analysis can be continued or not. Some of analysis data technique request test qualification analysis. Variant analysis requires that some of the data come from a population with a diverse people and different groups. So the variant analysis requires validity test, reliability, normality, linearity, hypothesis and descriptive statistics. The conclusion are as follow, first, based on the result of Descriptive Statistic in the matter of comprehension of students about the principle of sanctity in their fellowship at variable X1 stated hesitant with on average score 3, 49. Second, based on the result of Descriptive Statistic awareness about the principle of sex education in their fellowship of students Tompaso Adventist High School stated agree with an average total score 3.51. third, based on Descriptive Statistic in the matter of how deep the spirituality of the teachers on the school so they can have a strong foundation to be a guardian for their pupils in the variable X3 stated hesitant with an average total score 3,48. Advices that could be given are, first, it is necessary to have spiritual seminars and regular education in classes to elucidate about sanctity for a fellowship. Second, researcher suggest the school to make clear rules that inspired from Bible and Spirit of Prophecy to give a boundary in the fellowship and to bring the students to be guided in doing the principles of sanctity. Third, suggest the school to hold a revival program peculiar for teachers through Bible study, Spirit of Prophecy, prayer meeting and personal prayer. The implication of this research is by God’s help and grace, thus the students could follow the example of Jesus whom is an ordinary human but also has a strong relation with Almighty Father. Thus Paul Apostle whom because of his longing to greet Jesus in His day, he advice congregation to keep living in holiness. God’s people in the last day are also young people which are the Adventist students that being taught in the school and ought to do these principles around the last days waiting for the coming of Jesus.
