ABSTRACT CHANGES IN BLOOD PRESSURE AS ARESPONSE TO DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING EXERCISE IN CLIENTS WITH AN ELEVATED BLOOD PRESSURE AT UNIVERSITAS ADVENT INDONESIA Giovanni Maria Sinaga NIM: 1451010 Elevated blood pressure is a progressive condition. The preliminary study concluded that there is a potential for elevated blood pressure in students at Universitas Advent Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a change in blood pressure in clients with elevated blood pressure before and after diaphragmatic breathing exercise. This study used pre experimental design with one group pretest posttest. Respondents were selected by purposive sampling. The number of respondents was 17 nursing students staying at the dormitory of Universitas Advent Indonesia that had an elevated blood pressure for four days measured before the experiment. Respondents were taught to do diaphragmatic breathing exercise for five days. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured before and after the diaphragmatic breathing exercise. Data is calculated using paired t test. SBP average pretest was 121.88 mmHg with an average DBP of 79.72 mmHg. The mean of SBP post test 112.96 mmHg with an average DBP of 76.57 mmHg. The results showed that there were significant differences (p value <.05) of SBP and DBP after performing diaphragmatic breathing exercise. The researcher's suggestion for further research is to examine the effects of other breathing exercises such as pursed lip breathing on blood pressure. Keywords: Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercise, Elevated Blood Pressure
