Abstract TITLE : EFFECT OF DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM ON SPIRITUAL GROWTH OF CHURCH MEMBERS IN LIKAS CHURCH KOTA KINABALU, SABAH BASED ON 28:19 – 20 OF THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW Reseacher Name : Joihin Kango @ Jim Name and Title : Supervisory : Dr. B.D. Nainggolan, MPS End Date : ____ Mei 2015 The Great Commission of Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:19,20 clearly commands all believers to engage in discipleship. Discipleship was the method used by Jesus in His ministry while in this world to the twelve apostles. After His resurrection, He commanded His disciples to reach out and to disciple all tribes, people and nations in the world. People who were former disciples changed role to that of teacher and people who were made disciples in turn would be discipling others. In nutshell, there are two Biblical foundations for discipling. First, theological reason. In the Great Commission, Jesus commanded His disciples to make all nations the disciples of Jesus by reaching out to people, uniting them into the union of the saints and teaching truth of God’s Word until they are able to act the word in their lives. In Matthew 28: 19-20, there are four verbs that is, go, make, baptize, and teach. From the four verbs, making disciple is the root verb that placed it in the center, with three tasks that are expressed in three adverbs that is, go, baptize, and teach. In carrying out this task, Jesus gave assurance of His presence. Apart from basing on the Great Commission, the Bible gives example of discipleship in two levels. In the first level, the believers assembled everyday in the Temple of God to listen to the teaching of the apostles. In the next level, they held group meetings in house for evangelism, helping the needy, fellowship, and a more detailed instruction. Second, Historical reason. The story about the spreading of the twelve apostles to the whole world started from their calling by Jesus. In this call, Jesus specialized them by training them to reach out to the world well, that is the Gospel. The very short ministry of Jesus was soon extended by His disciples. They become the first generatiom in the chain of discipleship. Acts chapter 2 tells the story of them meeting together in big group and in small groups in houses. Apart from that, history recorded that in the 16th century, due to persecution, the followers of Anabaptist met together in believers’ houses to study the word and worshiping. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Pietist and the Moravian Group movements also met in small groups. This continues through this day that when persecution occurs, believers meet in small groups. Thus, discipleship is a very important thing that each Christian needs to do. The basis of doing discipleship is not only because Jesus commanded it in the Great Commission, but because Jesus also set the example in carrying out discipleship. Apart from that the Bible also recorded the early church doing discipleship. Based on this statement, the researcher seeks to examine the effect of discipleship program on the spiritual growth of the Kota Kinabalu City members, particularly church members in Likas, Sabah based on Matthew 28:19 – 20. The intention and aim of this research is first, to examine biblical concept about the effect of discipleship program based on the Gospel of Matthew 28:19-20 and equivalent texts through exposition. Second, to suggest several steps and methods that can contribute to improvement in the effect of discipleship program on spiritual growth so that the desired results can be obtained. Third, to contribute to positive and reliable effect of discipleship program on the spiritual growth particularly in Likas Church Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. The benefits of this research is first, practical benefit for the reseacher as a pastor. As a pastor, the researcher will acts as a model for pastoral ministry wherever the researcher serves and is involved in discipleship program. Second, the Seventh-day Adventist Church organization. To live out and teach biblical concept of discipleship as well as correct practice about the discipleship program to each servant of God that the person may have vision, innovativeness, authority and creativity that becomes the foundation or useful principle in the pastoral ministry. This research uses quantitative statistical method where apart from descriptive statistics, statistical tests such as validity, reliability, normality, linearity and hypotheses tests were conducted. The research findings can be concluded as follows: First, there is positive effect of the discipleship program conducted. Effect can be seen from the discipleship program on the spiritual growth of God’s people, and the effect is an increased in the score from 4.2099 to 4.9506. Second, the Biblical foundation and Spirit of Prophecy that undergird that fact is Matthew 28:19-20. Results of hypotheses testing show that there is influence of biblical foundation to involvement in discipleship mission in the magnitude of 50.1%. This shows that other variables still influence 49.9% of spiritual growth of church members. Third, based on descriptive statistics, it is known that the overall value is 4.6790. This means church members really understand Jesus’ Great Commission concept about discipleship and were able to help them to be active in discipleship resulting in positive effect as hoped for.
