ABSTRACK Tesis’ Title : ANALISYS OF UNDERSTANDING OF PUTRA AGUNG SDA CHURCH MEMBERS RELATED TO HUMOR IN SERMON BASED ON MATTHEW CHAPTER 5 AND THE WRITINGS OF ELLEN G. WHITE Name of Researcher : Fabyo Frets Lefrand Rumagit Material Guider : Dr. Bartholomeus Diaz N,.MPS. Done at : 2 April 2015 The sermon is an important thing in the spiritual growth of the church and the salvation of souls. Bringing the message is a challenge for the preacher as well as for those who are listening to the sermon can be enjoyable or other thing. Humor in the sermon is an interesting thing for the church, so in this case it should be investigated whether humor in the sermon can be used or not. The view of Putra Agung SDA Church members at Surabaya related to humor in the sermon based on Matthew chapter 5 and the writtings of Ellen G. White is the focus of this research. The background of using humor in the sermon that being noisy in worship time and changing sincerity in listening to the sermon, has brought the writer to study this case which is based on the context of Matthew chapter 5 and the writings of Ellen G. White and also the support of other Christian writers. Matthew chapter 5 has been studied based on the objectives, content and style of speaking of Jesus as well as observing the possibility of elements of using humor in the Sermon of Jesus on the hill? Through this study, the writer has been found that the absence of using humor in Jesus' Sermon on the hill. At the same time, Ellen G. White, in her writings, gives commentaries in using humor in sermons from her literature both in ordinary conversation or sermons that there is no evidince or indication that Ellen G. White approves the use of humor in the sermon. Humor in the sermon is an action of crucifying Christ and lead souls to stunted spirituality. The Christian authors provide opinion varied, humor can be used in a sermon, but must be in place and not intentional. Because sermon aimed at the salvation of souls. Although humor is found in the theory is not part of the sermon, but the Church of the Great Men of Surabaya as the object of this study suggest that humor can be a part of the sermon and can provide for the spiritual growth of the congregation who heard it. To sum up this study, based on theory and methods of research, which has seen or appeared on every indicator, it has found that humor is not part of the sermon, humor is a variation in the sermon, and sermon is holy and for the salvation of souls, and preaching the word of God for the salvation of soul. Here are some conclusion of this study: 1. Based on the results of descriptive statistics that correspondents agree on Humor is not part of a sermon by giving an average total score of 3.88, and correspondents also agree on Humor is the variation in the sermon with an average total score of 4:08. 2. Humor can be used in the sermon when the Humor is varying in preaching the sermon. If the sermon is varying with humor in Putra Agung Seventh-day Adventists Church at Surabaya, church members do not make the atmosphere of the church is an uproar and noisylike found from the biblical view is based on the book of Matthew chapter 5 and the Spirit of Prophecy as well as the views of Christian writers. 3. Based on the results of statistical tests that have been done saysthat the use of humor is necessary eventhough the humor is not required by Matthew chapters 5 and the Spirit of Prophecy which gives a total score of 4,158, it means that respondents agree that humor needs to vary in a sermon. 4. The type of sermon can give contribution to the spiritual growth of the church and can make the church tostay listening to a sermon based on Matthew chapter 5 and the Spirit of Prophecy is the kind of preaching that vary with humor based on the results of statistical tests.
