ABSTRACT Thesis Title : ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF PERSONAL FASTING TOWARD THE SPIRITUAL GROWTH OF THE SEVENTHDAY ADVENTIST CONGREGATION OF THE THIRTEEN AREA OF JAKARTA LOCAL CONFERENCE AND ITS SURROUNDINGS BASED ON MATTHEW 6:16-18 Researcher : Ruly Edward Tilaar Degree : Master Science of Philosophy (MSc.Ph) Mentor/Adviser : Dr. Stimson Hutagalung, M.Fil Completion : Mei, 2019. Analysis of the effect of personal fasting toward the spiritual growth of the Seventh-Day Adventist congregation of the thirteen area of Jakarta Local Conference and its surroundings based on Matthew 6:16-18 The Key Words: Effect, Fasting, Spiritual Growth. Fasting is a tool of human communication with God, which is inseparable in human life. The Bible repeatedly emphasizes the importance of fasting. Fasting gives each person a better spiritual life, fasting gives strength to each person and brings the heart close to God. Research on the Effects of Personal Fasting on Spiritual Growth of the Seventh- Day Adventist Church in Region 13 of the Jakarta Local Conference & Surrounding Based on Matthew 6: 16-18, it is very important to remember the importance of the involvement of all members in spiritual activities in the church especially in evangelism. For the importance of fasting, each church member must pay special attention to personal fasting, which will explain: Personal fasting is a tool of communication with God, personal fasting is the power of faith and personal fasting from church leaders will have a good effect on members' spiritual growth congregation. Many Christians, including members of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, are not aware of the importance of personal fasting, so they do not experience spiritual growth and involvement in church spiritual activities such as Sabbath School Services, Youth Program, Mid Week of Prayer, Care Group, Dawn Prayer, Holy Communion, and Closing the Sabbath, even tend to decline. The research was held in the Region 13 congregation of the Jakarta Local Conference & Surrounding Area, with the aim to find out the extent to which members' understanding of the effect of personal fasting is a means of communication with God, personal fasting is a strength of faith and the personal fasting of church leaders have a good effect in the spiritual growth of church members. The method used in this research is quantitative research, and the data collection tool used is a questionnaire to measure the effect of personal fasting on the spiritual growth of the Seventh-day Adventist Churches based on Matthew 6: 16-18. The results showed that there was a relationship between the growth of congregational spiritual activities towards personal fasting perseverance based on Matthew 6: 16-18, with a percentage of 41.5%. the effect of personal fasting on the growth of the spiritual activities of the congregational church is evidenced by the understanding of the importance of the personal fasting of a church leader; fasting as a power from God and fasting as communication with God. The lowest understanding is item number 11 with the smallest total score of 1.74, this indicates that every respondent in Region 13 of the Jakarta Local Conference has ever / never held a fast for evangelistic activities. This should be a serious concern through the role of the pastor to appeal and provide a good understanding of the importance of personal fasting. The final section is the conclusion of the analysis of the field research, suggestions and implications that can be applied and well understood about the importance of personal fasting towards the spiritual growth of the congregation of the Seventh Day Adventist Churches in the Jakarta Local Conference and its surroundings.
