ABSTRACT Title of Thesis : A PHILOSOPHICAL ANALYSIS OF UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHURCH MEMBERS OF THE SEVENTH DAY OF ADVENTIST CHURCH OF DISTRICT- B BALIKPAPAN, EAST KALIMANTAN INDONESIA REGARDINGTHE PULPIT MINISTRY BASED ON 2 TIMOTHY 4: 2. Researcher : Tulus Sinurat Degree : Master of Philosophy (M.Fil) Advisor : Dr. Rudolf Weindra Sagala, MPTh. Technical advisor : Dr. Stimson Hutagalung, M.Fil. Date : December 2020 It is quite interesting to research of the involvememnt the churh members in the pulpit ministry in 2 Timothy 4: 2, since many Christians are only listeners today. They prefer sitting in silence in church pews rather than engaging in serving. Moreover many members of the church are reluctant to serve and, because they still have sin and feel unworthy. Therefore several questioas are arise. The first, is the pulpit ministry should be taken over only by individuals who look right? Second, is the pulpit ministry only for those individuals? Who does it include in the pulpit ministry? According to Mr. Gosen Sinurat, in general all members were interested in preaching in the pulpit ministry, but only a small proportion were pleased to be involved, while others were not involved because of the lack of preparation of the content for the sermon. Yori Tampa said the same thingthat says only a minority of members are engaged in pulpit ministry. Interestingly, Willy Sitinjak expressed that pulpit ministry bring happines and blessings. Based on the description above, the author is interested to write a thesis with the entitled: "Philosophical Analysis of the Understanding of Seventh-Day Adventist Church Members District B Balikpapan East Kalimantan Indonesia About Mimbar Services Based on 2 Timothy 4: 2." The objectives of this study are: First, to clarify the pulpit ministry which is contained in 2 Timothy 4: 2. Second, understand the extent of the participation of church members in the pulpit minister. Third, the role of the organization in providing an understanding of the need for church members to be active in pulpit ministry. Theory Basis section the writer describes as follows: (1) the background of the book of 2 Timothy; Purpose of 2 Timothy; Author of 2 Timothy, Recipient of 2 Timotious, Theme of 2 Timothy, (2) Exposition of 2 Timothy 4: 2, (3) Platform Ministry in the New Testament, (4) Meaning of Service, (5) Attitude and Character Expected from a Person servants of God, (6) Framework, and (7) Research Hypothesis. The variables in this study are, X1 Understanding of pulpit ministry in 2 Timothy 4: 2, X2 Lack of involvement of members of the congregation in pulpit ministry that makes the relationship between members tenuous, X3 The influence of organizational leaders in the provision of knowledge and explanation on pulpit ministry. The number of respondents who have filled out the questionnaire from 116 items is 118 people. Respondent profiles consist of: gender, age, education, responsibility in the congregation. Analysis is needed to determine whether data analysis for testing can be continued or not. Several data analysis techniques demand a test of analysis requirements. Analysis of variance requires that the data come from a normally distributed population and homogeneous compared groups. Therefore analysis of variance requires testing of validity, reliability, normality, linearity, hypothesis and descriptive statistics. The conclusion that can be given is as follows, first, the level of understanding of pulpit ministry in 2 Timothy 4: 2 is 4.092. Thus, the average response of the members of the District B Balikpapan congregation in East Kalimantan is to agree on where they understand the meaning of pulpit ministry. Second, the lack of participation of congregation members in the pulpit ministry which causes the relationship among members to be tenuous by 4.018. With the results, it can be seen that the understanding of pulpit ministry causes church members to be tenuous. Third, the level of influence of organizational leaders in providing information and explanations about pulpit services of 4,278. Based on the results of the respondents, the influence of the leader in providing information about the high pulpit service with the results seen. The author provides the following suggestions: First, the need a clarification and bring a clearer understanding of pulpit ministry baseon on 2 Timothy 4: 2. Second, in connection with the lack of participation of church members in the pulpit ministry, the author will hold Bible study activities to strengthen the spirituality of church members by giving personal lessons and making special revivals for the congregation and to increase the involvement of members in pulpit ministry. Third, the author will give suggestions for organizations to be able to provide an understanding of the need for active church members in pulpit ministry through seminars and training.
