THE EFFECT OF IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS TOWARDS IMPROVING SCORES ON THE LISTENING SECTION OF THE TOEFL TEST

ABSTRACT Listening is a skill of English that has long been neglected, which is why students find it difficult to answer questions regarding listening especially in TOEFL tests. There are many factors why students find listening to be difficul! one of which is background knowledge and the researcher chose to focus on idiomatic expressions. By adding idioms to the general lecture, the researcher hoped that the students, scores on the listening section ofthe TOEFL test will increase. This research was done to 49 students ofEnglish 3 (Listening) remedial students ofUniversitas Advent Indonesia. They were divided to form and experimental and contolled goup. A pretest and posttest was done. The experimental gtoup was given feament (idioms) through the Classroom Jigsaw, Role-play, Dctogloss and Flashcards methods. The daa gathered was then statistically calculated and analyzed. According to the t-Test results, T*u,,t: - .576 and Tulr" (with o = .05) = l, 699 which means that T"o*, < T656. Also, the sigrrifionaeg score is .567 (p value) which is larger than alpha : .05, therefore Ho is not rejected or there is no sigrificant effect of idiomatic expressions toward improving listening
