ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH Master of Ministry Thesis (M.Min) Adventist University of Indonesia Bandung Faculty ofPhilosophy and Theology Title: ROLE OF CHURCH ELDER IN INCREASING THE NUMBER OF BAPTISM IN SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH JAKARTA CONFERENCE - REGION 3 Name of researcher : Palmen Sinaga Name and degree of faculty advisor : R. Hutabarat, MA, M.Div, Ph.D Date completed : February 2009 The word "Elder" in Greek called "presbuteros' or *bishop" (episkopos) is a very important position. Elder means an honored man that has an authority, on power, respected person. He is just like a man who keep an eye on synagog. Meanwhile "bishop" means "overseer.' However Paul put these Elder, overseer and bishop at the same level (Act 20:17,28; Titus l:5, 7). The person who has been chosen as an Elder has responsibility to keep an eye and giving guidance to the congregation. "Elder" refer to a status or ranh while Bishop rcfer to a duty or function which is to pasuring the congregation (l Peter 5:l; 2 John l; 3 John l). Elder's function is as to lead the congregation to be faithful in doing the task of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. God's Word in I Timothy 4:14-16 says 'Neglect not the gift that is in thee". Elder's spiritual gifts influence church growth and advancement. One of the church gowth indicator is the increase number of individuals involved in spreading the gospel that leads to the increased number of baptism. Then Paul says Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine. Willingness to do the task is needed to easily move and lead people in doing the soulwinning task. In chapter 5 verse l7 "Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine". Church elder's task is noble and this position comes with huge responsibility to train people to be involved in evangelism. Paul says "Preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine" (2 Timothy 4:2). Elder's role not only to lead in the evangelism but also to keep the congrcgation holiness, patiently providing advise and counsels to the congregation so that everyone can be involved in the evangelism. The Bible says that to be chosen as elder someone must have these quality: "able", "fear of God" and "men of truth" (Genesis 18:21). In New Testament it is also said "blameless, the husband ofone wife, vigilant, sob€r, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to kach" (l Timothy 3:2, 3). This Thesis is used to find out the leadership fo community in increasing the sum of baptism of Sevent Day Adventist Church in third region DKI Conference of Jakarta- It is found that not all the elders who are on duty in period 2008 did their role to increase the baptism. It is found through the questionnaire which are divided to the elders or the church members.
