AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH VOWELS PRONUNCIATION MAONG THE STUDENTS OF ENGLISH MAJOR DEPARTMENT OF UNIVERSITAS ADVENT INDONESIA
XMLABSTRACT Language is an instrument of conmunicating meaning from one human mind to another by vocal sounds, gestures, signals, written symbols or the fike. Of aIl Ianguage activities, however speech is certainly the most common and widespread. This research is an attempt to explore students' ability in pronouncing English vowels sound. It arms at figuring out the problems face by the respondents in reproducing vowels sounds in correct ways. The data are ccIIe.ted by employing questionnaires and a reading passage aloud test. Taking into account the problems of the study, the descriptive method rs employed to describe the ability of the respondents ln pronouncing vowels sounds. The result shows that there are 3 l25Z ) respondents with high level, 6 (502) respondents with mediocre Ievel, 2 (16.74) respondents with low level and 1 (8.3?) respondents with very fow level Erom the questionnaires, there is 67% of the respondents pre fer 1n reading alouci, like to listen to people when they talk and also want to make corrections when others make wrong pronunciations and 338 of the respondents are seldom in spending their time to read al-oud. listenrng to other peopfe, and make correction when other make wrong pronunciations. There are 83% of the respondents who belleve that learning English Phonology could help them 1n pronouncing Engllsh sounds, and 17% of the respondents who are not so sure whether learning Engllsh Phonology helps in the development for better pronunciat ion. And after conducting the researchT the writer found that eveiy respondents tends to give equal stress 1n pronunciation mistakes are Cone by the majority which caused by the respondents mother tongue interference, and also the lack of consulting the dictionary makes English vowels sounds s.imilar with Indonesian sounds. The writer hopes that this research will give more support and contribution to the teaching and learning process of EngIish, especially in teaching English Pronunciat ion .
