AN ANALYSIS ON THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VOCABULARY MASTERY AND READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY

ABSTRACT This study rs aimed at finding out the correlation between vocabulary mastery and students' reading comprehension ability- It is assumed that there is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and students' reading comprehension abiliLy and it has posi-tive correlation. The sampfe of the study is the thj-rd year English major students. The total respondents are l7' From the data analysis, it is found that the correlation coefficient of variables is 0.7. At df = N-2 at significant degree L percent leveI, tg.51s = 2'6, while tco,.,red = 3.5' So tcount.d = 3.5 ) tt"lt.:2'6' Based on the significance test wrth alpha at 0.01, it can be concluded that there is significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehensj-on ability and has positive correlation. With the result of deierrnl-nant coefficient equals 45?, so the contributicn of vocabuLary mastery (x) to reading comprehension ability (Y) is 45%' Meanwhile, the rest 100? - 452 equals 55?, j't was influenced bY other factors.
