ABSTRACTION Title of Thesis : PHILOSOPHICAL ANALYSIS MAINTAINING THE BALANCE BETWEEN EVANGELISM AND PASTORING AMONG THE PASTORS OF MINAHASA CONFERENCE OF THE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH BASED ON ACTS 20:21, 28 Researcher’s Name : Kalvein Rudolf Mongkau Degree : Master of Philosophy Material Advisor : Dr. Stimson Hutagalung, M. Fil Technical Advisor : Reyman Hutabarat, M. Div, Ph. D Completed Date : September 05th, 2019 In this thesis has described the background of the problem, identification of the problem which consists of seven identifications, then in limiting the problem the author has limited the problem to be examined as many as three things. First, identifying that most of the pastors in the Minahasa Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist have not fully understand yet the importance of evangelism so they did not realize their primary responsibility in evangelism especially evangelistic activities through small groups or individual evangelism. Secondly, identifying that most pastors and members of the congregation at the Minahasa Conference also did not realize strongly the importance of shepherding so that they had not given themselves fully in pastoral care including shepherding to those who were less active and those who had apostatized. Third, identifying that pastors have not carried out the balance between evangelism and pastoral care as expected by the leaders of the Minahasa Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist, in the sense that efforts have been made but have not received balanced attention between the two aspects. So the author formulates this thesis writing in three parts. First, the author wants to see the level of understanding of the pastors at the Minahasa Conference of Seventh-day Adventist Church regarding the importance of evangelistic work including small group evangelism and personal evangelism. Second, the author wants to see how far the level of understanding of the pastors in the Minahasa Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church related to the importance of pastoral work. Third, the author wants to see how far the level of understanding of the pastors in the Minahasa Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is related to the importance of maintaining a balance between evangelism and pastoral work. Because the main indicators of this study are evangelism, shepherding and the balance between evangelism and shepherding, this study was made with the intent to find out the imbalance between evangelism and shepherding among the ministers of Minahasa Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The purpose of this study is to examine the level of understanding and level of awareness of the ministers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Minahasa Conference regarding the importance of the work of evangelism and shepherding and the balance between the two as mandated by the apostle Paul in Acts 20:21 and 28 to the elders in the church at Ephesus. This research aims to provide a theoretical benefit that the words of the apostle Paul contained in Acts 20:21, 28 are not only intended or mandated to the elders in Ephesus but also to the ministers and even church leaders within the Adventist local churches of Minahasa Conference. Based on the title of this research that is Philosophical Analysis Maintaining the Balance Between Evangelism and Pastoring among the Pastors of Minahasa Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church Based on Acts 20:21, 28 then maintaining the balance between evangelism and shepherding is part of the Great Commission of Jesus Christ in Matthew 28: 19, 20. That is a commission has not internalized and lived by the twelve disciples of Jesus but also by the apostle of Paul. And implicitly that is the mandate or command that he has advised or mandated the elders of the church at Ephesus (Acts 20:21, 28). Based on the results of statistical tests indicate that the level of awareness of the pastors to maintain a balance between evangelism and pastoral care is still low. On the one hand, they like to read books to be able to convey the gospel in a way that is appropriate to the current situation. However, on the other hand, the number of counseling activities they hold for their church members is still low and small group activities have not been effective. It is possible that most were only attended by members of the congregation. So this shows that the work of evangelism and pastoral care has not been maintained in a balanced way. And this can answer the hypothesis that appeared in Chapter 2, the third hypothesis of the author where it is suspected that the level of understanding and awareness of the ministers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Minahasa Conference related to maintaining a balance between evangelism and shepherding is low. In graph 4. 7 in Chapter IV of the chapter 4, it has been shown that the highest average descriptive statistics per variable is X1 variable, which is a score of 4.66. This means that the average respondent's answers strongly agree on the Importance of Evangelistic Work. Then the average respondent's answers agree with the importance of pastoral work shown by the X2 variable with a score of 4.53. While the smallest one is the Y variable about the balance between evangelism and shepherding based on Acts 20:21, 28 where the score is 4.45. This score shows that the work of evangelism and pastoral care in local congregations that are served by the ministers in the Minahasa Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church have not been balanced. It is clear that this indicates that the work of evangelism is more focused on than shepherding or vice versa. This shows that there is still a score gap between Variable X1 = evangelism (4.66) and Variable X2 = shepherding (4.53), where the number is still 0.13. So besides there is still a gap between the two variables (X1 and X2), there is also a gap between the Variables X1 (evangelism = 4.53) and the Y variable (Balance between Evangelism and Pastoralism = 4.45) where these two variables are each 0.21 adrift. While the gap between the variables X2 (shepherding) = 4.53) and the Y variable (the balance between evangelism and shepherding = 4.45), it is adrift at 0.08. Each of these linkages shows that there are still gaps between the three variables namely evangelism (X1), shepherding (X2) and the balance between evangelism and shepherding (Y). The score on variable X1 (evangelism) is higher than the variable X2 (shepherding) and higher than the variable Y (balance between evangelism and shepherding). This answers the hypothesis in Chapter 2, the third hypothesis of the author where it is suspected that the level of understanding and awareness of the ministers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Minahasa Conference related to maintaining a balance between evangelism and shepherding is low. This also clearly proves the limitation of the research problem listed in Chapter 1 that the pastors throughout the Minahasa Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist have not carried out the balance between evangelism and shepherding as expected by the leaders of the Minahasa Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist. In the sense that eventhough efforts have been made, the two aspects, namely evangelism and pastoral care, have not received balanced attention. So based on the formulation of the third problem as stated in Chapter 1 related to the statement of how far the level of understanding of the pastors in the Minahasa Conference about the importance of maintaining a balance between evangelism and pastoral work, the answer is that the level of understanding of the pastors in the Minahasa Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist about the importance of maintaining a balance between evangelism and pastoral work is low.
