ABSTRACT IMPROVING STUDENTS ABILITY IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT THROUGH MIND MAPPING AT SMP NEGERI 4 CISARUA Hanaberta Teresa Barus ID: 1521024 Writing is an essential language skill. Writing equips us with communication and thinking skills. Writing fosters our ability to explain and refine our ideas to others and ourselves. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to find out the improvement of students’ writing ability through Mind Mapping. This research used a quantitative research method with a quasi-experimental design. This study compared the students’ writing achievement before and after the treatments through the pretest and posttest which were given for both experimental and control groups. This research was conducted to answer two problems: Improvising the ability of students to use mind mapping and Student responses to mind mapping. The samples of this study were two classes from SMP Negeri 04 Cisarua: 23 students of grade VIII-A and 22 students of grade VIII-B. The instruments used for this study were writing tests in the form of one essay question, where the students have to write a descriptive text about the topic given. The result of this study showed that the students’ writing improvement increased from each class and there is a significant difference between those who are taught using Mind Mapping and those who are taught using a conventional method. Hence, this research also proved that there were positive responses regarding the used techniques in improving students’ writing ability. Researchers hope that research can be useful for teachers to create an enjoyable situation in the teaching-learning process so that the students can be involved actively in class.
