ABSTRACT EFFECTIVITY OF ICE COMPRESS ON INTENSITY OF PAIN PRIOR TO INTRAVENOUS CATHETER INSERTION AT KLINIK UNIVERSITAS ADVENT INDONESIA Suryana Artha Richa NIM: 1451077 Intravenous insertion procedure is the simple and routine procedure for health care providers, but it can caused pain and traumatic events for patients (Baheti dan Laheri, 2014:339). The purpose of this research study to identify the effectivity of ice compress on intensity of pain prior to intravenous catheter insertion at Klinik Universitas Advent Indonesia. This research used preexperimental designs intact-group comparison which divided into experimental group and control group. The population of this research are all patients who needed intravenous catheter insertion at Klinik Universitas Advent Indonesia. The samples are 36 patients which taken by accidental sampling. The instrument tools that applied for both group was observation form such as Verbal Rating Scale (VRS). Ice compress (ice with 0 ºC temperature in 8 cm x 4 cm which covered with cotton cloth) applied at the venous insertion site prior to intravenous catheter insertion for 5 minutes. Result of this research found that mean rate of intensity of pain for control group was 2.5, and mean rate for experimental group was 0.72. Normality of research data was tested with Shapiro-Wilk test with result (0,000) means that the data was not normally distributed so Mann Whitney test used for this research. From Z Mann Whitney test result -5,166 with p = 0.000 asymp syg value, it means the null hypothesis is rejected. This research found that there is a significant difference of pain intensity between experimental group and control group. It was concluded that ice compress application decreases pain effectively during intravenous catheter insertion. Keywords: ice compress, pain, intravenous catheter insertion.
