A COMPARISON IN VOCABULARY SIZE AMONG THE ELEVENTH GRADERS: EVIDENCE FROM READING AND SPEAKING THROUGH USING BILINGUAL (ENGLISH-INDONESIAN) AND MONOLINGUAL (ENGLISH-ENGLISH) AS MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION

XML img-mendeley

ABSTRACT We often assumed that bilingual students have less vocabulary size and delay in word learning in comparison to the monolinguals. This brief research is a quantitative research that shows not only a significant difference in vocabulary size between bilinguals and monolinguals, but a significant improvement between the two groups of eleventh graders through using bilingual and monolingual as medium of instruction. Word learning often depends on how often the students have opportunities to hear words in context. In other words, the more the students expose to one or more languages, the more words they possess. Vocabulary knowledge is cumulative, and it all depends on the linguistic experiences. The significant difference as well as significant improvement in this research lies upon the time exposure, the creativity to modify the teaching materials, and using both bilingual and monolingual as medium of instruction. Keywords: bilingualism, word meaning, vocabulary acquisition
