AN ANALYSIS ON THE ROLE OF SPELLING CAPABILITY ON THE ENGLISH PERFORMANCE OF THE THIRD YEAR BUSINESS STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITAS ADVENT INDONESIA

ABSTRACT This research entitled "The RoIe of Spelling Capability on the English Performance of the t.hird year Business students at Universitas Advent Indonesia". The research was conducted to answer: (1) How couLd spelling capability affects the English performance of Business students vJho are taking English VI, and (2) lihat are the spelling problems of the Business students taking English VI . The data lrere collected through questionnaire and written test. Al-1, the data were analyzed and categorized, so that the data could be sorted out and classified according to their relevancy to answer to research problems. This study found that,' from the test results, there are 5 (21 .74t) respondents with high leveL, 12 l52.l7Z) respondents with medj-ocre leve1, 5 (21 .'l4Z], respondents with low Ievel and 1 (4.35t) respondent with very low level. From the questionnaire, there is 50t of the respondents who have more knowJ-edge in English education by learning English since they were in Elementary school and have taken English courses, and there is 50t respondents who have not. There is 17-572 of the respondents who know how to spelling capability, and there is 28.43? who realize that their spel I j-ng capabj-lity of the respondents improve their respondents needs to be improved. using the found out knowledge the lack There is 513 spe.L I j-ng some respondents' and informations who prefer on rules, and there is 49? respondents who are not prefer on using the spelling ru1es. There is 59.67ts of the respondents who are capable in memorizing and respondents who understanding. And after understanding. and there is 40.33% have Iess capability in memorizing and conducting the research, the writer problems: (a) the .l-ack of of the of interest in improving capability to the English performance. (c) the lack of awareness of the importance of their writing on improving spell-ing performance. The writer hopes that the findings of the present study can give some contributions to the improvement of the quality of language teaching.
