COLLABORATIVE STRATEGIC READING AND READING COMPREHENSION DEVELOPMENT AMONG BUSSINESS STUDENTS

ABSTRACT Due to the fact that even tertiary students are still somehow having low capability in comprehending the passage, a method ought to be implemented to help this problem. This study entitled "Collaborative Strategic Reading and Reading Comprehension Development Among Business Students," in which Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) was employed to investigate its effectiveness in promoting reading comprehension in tertiary Ievel. Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) was a comprehension strategy that required cooperative working (Klingner and Vaughn, 1998); and it was designed to equip students having learning disabilities to have a higher comprehension (Klingner and Vaughn, 2004). The participants involved in this study were Business students at Universitas Advent Indonesia. There were three major activities involved in this research; pre tesg CSR implementation, and post test. The participants were asked to finish a set ofquestions adapted from TOEFL, Barron's series the ninth edition, in pre test and post test. During CSR implementation, the participants were demonstrating four strategies using different materials also adapted from TOEFL the ninth edition. This four weeks research obtained data follows: n, = 15 , a = e,eJ , i = l,S, r, = -0,71and l,u" = !2,048.From the dat4 the improvement existed from ir to iz is 1,8 (6%); this insignificant improvement berw"", i, to i, indicated that CSR rvas not effective in promoting reading comprehension of tertiary level. Furthermore, each result obtained by participant was put into suitable level ofEnglish to decipher their general ability.
