THE ANALYSIS OF STUDENT READING HABIT AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO STUDENTS CRITICAL THINKING AMONG THE ENGLISH MAJOR STUDENT AT UNIVERSITAS ADVENT INDONESIA

ABSTRACT Currently, reading habit and critical thinking have been growing to be more J-mperatively needed to be possessed by those who want to be able to compete in today's complex world. They are related a lot to education and the result of learning. Somehow, the phenomena show that there is no guarantee for uni-vers j-ty graduates to be directly considered as good readers or critical thinkers. Neverthel-ess, it is believed that one's reading habit can develop his,/her critical thinking. In accordance with the above explanation, this study portrays the students' reading habit and their critical thinking to seek in what ways reading habit develops their critical thinking. To get the portrait of their reading habit and the criticaf thinking, the sample, the students of English Department, at Universitas Advent Indonesia, have been assigned to respond to the guestionnaires and the interview and then to the reading material provided.' Their reading habit is then assessed by considering their when, where, and what they read, also by hrhy and how they read. Meanwhile, their critical thinking i-s assessed based on the content of their response to the text. Based on the analysis to those students, it is revealed thaL first, either when, where and what they read or why and how they read concerns with their attitude toward reading. Then, it shows that the positive attitude enables them to be better readers. It is related to their reading abilities and strategies - Meaning that the differences and similarities of why and how they reid more cfearl,y identify the result of their critical thinking. In short, it is j.n that case their reading habit enables them to have good/better reading abilities and strategies, which lead them to get more pleasure in reading and result in better critical thinking.
