ABSTRACT COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF SMP STUDENTS’ MATHEMATICAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS THROUGH MULTI REPRESENTATION STRATEGY SMALL GROUPS AND CLASSICAL Lastria NIM: 1222003 The research conducted on this study was comparative study with two research sample from two classes of seven (VII) grade students at SMPN 1 Parongpong, Bandung Barat. Grade seven B as the first group who obtained multi representation strategies in small groups and grade seven D as the second group who obtained multi representation strategies in classical way. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in the improvement of junior high school students’ mathematical communication skills from two different treatments, namely, Multi Representation in Small Groups and Classical. The data was obtained from pre-test and post-test and was analyzed using descriptive and statistical techniques. The result of students’ responses questionnaire showed that students loved to learn math with multi representation strategies in small groups. The instrument used was questions of communication skills in the form of essay. Data were analyzed with two different average test or Mann-Whitney statistical with significance level α = 0.05 the data obtained showed that the strategy of multi representation in small groups improved students' mathematical communication skills significantly compared with the multi representation strategies with classical. It can be concluded that the strategy of multi representation strategy in small groups could improve junior high school students’ mathematical communication skills.
