THE EFFECT OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF DIRECTED READING-THINKING ACTIVITIES METHOD ON THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE STUDENTS READING COMPREHENSION IN SMPN 3 PARONGPONG BANDUNG

Abstract Reading is one ofthe four skills in English. Teaching reading is a challenging task. A good strategy is needed to make reading more interesting, that is why the kind of method is important to make reading interesting for leaming English, the key to succ€ss in teaching reading is a strategy. This study was done in SMPN 3 Parongpong, Bandung. The title is "The Effect of Directed Reading - Thinking Activity on Students' Reading Comprehension Achievement." The pre-test and post-test were done during second semester of 2012-2013 school years at SMPN 3 Parongpong, Bandung. The participants were taken from 86 grade students, who were divided into rwo $oups that are control group and experimental group. Reading comprehension test which has been standardized was used as the instrument in this study. The writer found that the mean of pre-test in control group was 57. 13 and 64.6 on the post-test. While for the experimental group, the mean score for pre-test was 58.83 and the mean score in post-test was 71.43. And p-value was 0.00 is lower than o = 0.05, it means that there is significant effect on students' reading comprehension achievement when they were taught DR-TA in reading class. From this result, it can be concluded that there is a significance effect on students' achievement on reading comprehension after treatment. Keywords: DR-TA reading comprehension
